Yes! California now covers Doula’s under their State Medi-Cal Plans! Through continued advocacy and education by pioneering Doulas in California and New York the state governments (in those states) now consider Doula’s as an integral part of the birth care team. Doula’s are now able to be reimbursed for their services (after becoming a medi-cal provider) If you are not a Medi-cal recipient under the partnership health plan you can use your HSA or FSA accounts to reimburse for Doula Services, just confirm with your account provider for a list of covered services.
Doula’s do not handle any of the clinical or medical aspects of birth that is the role your Midwife or Obstetrician will hold. A Doula helps educate and prepare you for your birth and will encourage you and remind you of your birth preferences. We will help you find your voice and coach you on how to advocate for yourself. If something is determined to be outside our scope of practice we will refer you to the appropriate person or persons for further assistance. We do not make any medical diagnosis or decisions for you but you will be empowered and educated to do this for yourself.

Not at this time, but I am still researching the evidence on Placentophagy. I will decide soon if I will take the course and incorporate this into my practice.
